The empadronamiento is your registration at the Ayuntamiento (town hall). It's required within 1 month of moving and is essential for accessing public healthcare, schools, social services, and voting. It also determines funding for your municipality.
The annual tax return (declaración de la renta) is typically due in June (filing period April-June). Whether you must file depends on income sources and amounts. The Agencia Tributaria provides a draft (borrador) you can review and confirm.
The tarjeta sanitaria is your public health card, issued through Seguridad Social once you're empadronado and registered. It covers GP visits, hospital care, and prescriptions. Keep it updated after any address change.
Apply at a Policía Nacional comisaría. Adult passport valid 10 years. Processing: 3-4 weeks standard, 2-3 days urgent (extra fee). The DNI (national ID card) is separate, also valid 10 years — renew at the same comisaría.
The ITV (Inspección Técnica de Vehículos) is a mandatory vehicle inspection. New cars first tested at 4 years, then every 2 years (until 10 years), then annually. Without it, you cannot renew insurance or vehicle tax. Book early at an approved ITV station.
