Your NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your tax number, issued by Finanças. You need it for everything — employment, banking, utilities, contracts, and government services. Foreigners get one upon arrival. Keep it secure and update your address at Finanças after moving.
The annual IRS tax return is filed April 1 to June 30. Most employees receive a pre-filled draft via Portal das Finanças to review and confirm. The tax authority (AT) then issues the settlement notice by late summer.
The Abono de Família is the child benefit paid by Segurança Social — amounts vary by family income (escalões). Apply after birth registration, paid monthly per child under 16 (or 24 if disabled). Report income changes annually and family changes promptly.
Apply via the IRN (Instituto dos Registos e Notariado) — online renewal available for adults. Valid 10 years, costs ~€65. Processing: 5-7 days standard, 2-3 days urgent. The Cartão de Cidadão (citizen card/ID) is separate, valid 10 years.
The IPO (Inspeção Periódica Obrigatória) is the mandatory vehicle inspection. New cars first tested at 4 years, then every 2 years, then annually (older cars). Without it, you cannot renew insurance or the livrete (registration). Book early at an IPO centre.
