The Anmeldung is your official address registration at the Bürgeramt, required within 14 days of moving. It's essential for everything — tax (Steuer-ID), bank accounts, internet contracts, health insurance, and Kindergeld. You'll receive your Steuer-ID by post after registering.
Kindergeld is €259 per month per child, paid by the Familienkasse. Apply after Anmeldung and birth registration. It's paid until age 18 (or 25 if in education). Report changes (income, child leaving education) promptly to avoid overpayments.
The annual income tax return (Steuererklärung) is typically due July 31 of the following year (with tax advisor, deadline extends). Most employees must file if they have multiple income sources or want to claim deductions.
Apply at the Bürgeramt or passport authority. Adult Reisepass is valid 10 years, costs ~€60-80 (express available for extra fee). Processing: 4-6 weeks standard, 2-3 days express. The Personalausweis (ID card) is separate and also valid 10 years.
The TÜV (or HU/AU) is a mandatory vehicle safety and emissions inspection. New cars first tested at 3 years, then every 2 years. Driving without valid TÜV risks fines and insurance issues. Book early as deadlines approach.
