Your fødselsnummer (national identity number) is issued by the Folkeregister. It's essential for tax, healthcare (fastlege), banking, employment, and all government services. D-numbers are issued to short-term residents. Register your address within 8 days of moving.
Most taxpayers receive a pre-filled tax return (skattemelding) in March/April. Review and submit by April 30 (or May for self-employed). Corrections via Altinn or Skatteetaten. Refunds paid automatically if no changes needed.
NAV pays barnetrygd — a flat monthly amount per child under 18 (or 19 if in school). It's automatic once registered. Apply for parental benefit (foreldrepenger) via NAV. Report income and family changes promptly to avoid overpayments.
Apply at the Police (Politiet) — appointments online. Adult passport valid 10 years (5 years for under-18), processing 2-3 weeks standard, 1-2 days urgent. The Norwegian ID card is separate, valid 10 years, from the same office.
The EU-kontroll (periodic vehicle inspection) is mandatory every 2 years for cars 4+ years old (annually for taxis/heavy vehicles). Without it, you cannot renew insurance or registration. Book early at an approved godkjent kontrollsted.
